Volunteer befriending schemes for the elderly and vulnerable in our community are familiar all over the world these days. There are many advantages for the person who is befriended and for the volunteer befriender.
Peabody have been running a successful befriending scheme in the London Borough of Wandsworth for the last three years. We have now decided to extend this scheme to the Hackney area and will initially focus our energy on the Pembury estate.
Befrienders provide good company and can assist in useful everyday support. As well as a cup of tea and a chat this might involve escorting someone to the end of the road to buy a newspaper. You might give them some help to get round the supermarket. Some people might even need occasional help and support to go to the hospital or to the doctors.
Volunteers for this scheme will receive induction training and further free training in a variety of subjects such as ‘Working with Vulnerable Adults, Introduction to Mental Health or Communication skills.
They will be given help with job applications and with job searches and successful volunteers can be provided with suitable references.
Befrienders can also be encouraged to improve their IT skills and their literacy skills.
All travel and meals expenses for Well Met volunteers will be reimbursed with receipts.
